Heres your chance : Is TDCJ staffing still at dangerous levels , morale still dangerously low?

By The Backgate

So sound off out there statewide. Is your unit/facility up to par with staffing, if not is overtime still an issue? What about morale? Does it exist, and how can it be improved where your at? Please post the region you work in when posting your comments, and keep it clean. We will be using your comments for an upcoming story.

  1. It's like this - we got a new class in about 2 weeks ago of which our shift got 8. Already we've lost 2 of them plus 2 more wemt days. From talking to a couple of other new officers they have plans to be gone within 3 months if not before.

While we look good on the books we still have a call-in prolem and morale sucks. Why? Cause the sgt. calling out assignments will literally stop to erase and move names around to HIS liking. There won't even have been somebody called out that wasn't there, he just does it cause this buddy or that wasn't where he wanted him. And that is the truth though I wish it wasn't.

Seniority and experience don't always mean a lot, it's more who you know but then it's always been that way.

  2. Well im from region II.... Morale is the same on the Hutchins Unit. Yes on paper it looks as we have plenty of people . But we also have many call-in!!! We have Rank from the Wardens down that don't care about their staff and run them into the ground... Look back just a few months ago with how the Asst. Warden searched a staff memembers house for some keys that were never found still to this day..... But he still got his job even after being arrested..... LET A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER GO TO JAIL AND THEY WOULD LOSE THEIR JOB...... IT SHOULD BE THAT WARDEN BE MOVED AROUND AFTER 2 YEARS.... GOD HELP US ALL...

  3. I'm in Region II and at the unit I'm at we just finished ACA, so of course they sent us 2 or 3 preservice classes to fill our racks, but I figure in a couple months we will be just as short as we were before ACA.

  4. Im from region IV and we have barely enough officers to cover the pods in seg( thats with one of them shutdown) we are still being given mandatory OT weekly. If it wasn't for region III nothing would get done. We have 18 names assigned to shift and people are burning out. They would rather work at stripes then TDCJ. Well eventually we are gonna break.

  7. At my unit in region III, most of the staff are visa holding Nigerians, who have no real knowledge of what their supposed to be doing, they seem to just go through the motions. Offenders are allowed to do what they want so long as rank isn't around. Morale is non existent due to all of the ass chewing that goes on, because certain staff members don't understand how to do their job. Also the mandatory overtime is still there and enforced. As for the staffing, it's not enough to completely run the shift properly and safely.

  9. Region 2. (The 'transfer unit). No overtime allowed, yet we don't have enough staff to man the dining halls or the bowling alley during any mass movement. The rank works the chow halls and there is NOBODY to respond to fights and officer assistance calls. 'They' list the H card positions as if they are on shift so it looks staffed, yet the Hcard officers still have a job to do elsewhere. Our showers/lay ins and moves still get done by the ONE officer. When you see the hallway, it is filled with offenders, from one end to the other, wandering wherever they please and standing around in groups. Everybody realizes that there is no help coming if you get into it with an offender, so rules are not enforced. The nuts are truly running things. The head warden is more concerned with the birds not getting any bread scraps than anything.

    2. No sir. The Gurney Unit.
My original post left out a few sentences for some reason. **Our ad seg post orders and sop says clearly that TWO officers will ALWAYS be on the floor when an offenders door is open, for any reason. At our unit, the shift roster shows two officer assigned to the floor. In reality, the second officer is pulled to work in population as soon as the shift gets started ! The remaining officer is on the floor by themselves for all of the showers/rec/layins. We house regular ad seg, PHD, solitary, transit(life sentences/serious crimes/youthful offenders etc) in the one 'wing'. One offender slips cuffs they have access to the entire population.....THE DOOR KEY IS CARRIED ON THE FLOOR ! of course when that happens the one officer will be blamed.

    3. well don't feel bad that happens on every unit because we don't come together and call for them to run it right.... as we get a 5% raise but will end up being 1% after ALL IS SAID AND DONE. AND THE HIGHER UPS GET A BIG PAY RAISE......

  11. I work at gid Lewis unit in woodville tx and we let offenders do what they want. My lt said they don't want you to gas offenders until they cut them self even if policy said to if they attempt to . They are afraid of paperwOrk . Shift Is low and no one stays on there building because they don't have a anyone that quants to stay on the unit

Every boom will be followed by a bust. When the bust comes to the oil industry all those young guys that left will return as old broken down fat guys with prior TDCJ experience. See - there's an upside.

Well yes I am. That's the circle of life. If one lives long enough eventually everyone turns into an old broken down fat guy/gal. I wasn't knocking old broken down fat guys. My point was that when the boom times are over TDCJ will always take them back. Now leave me alone - I have a second quarter pounder I'm trying to finish before it's time for lunch.

  14. I work Region IV and we stay understaffed. For every 10 new boots we get we'll be lucky to retain 2 because of things like rampant favoritism that run across lines like veteran officers to sexual orientation and they become disheartened and go elsewhere to leave this line of work behind. TDC however is cyclical in regards to staffing and things will no doubt get worse before they get better.

  15. Tdcj is crooked from the top. Texas legilature on down. No wonder co morale is down. The money hits the pockets of our texas legislature. Profit of tdcj is given to gov. Officials. On down to corp.

  17. Sergeants don't get breaks. Some desk officers don't get breaks. Officers that do get breaks, get them at 7am or 5pm. Some category 1 positions are pencil-whipped to show them filled, but in actuality those positions are left vacant. There are officers and sergeants alike (ACA officers, STG and Safe Prisons sergeants and officers, EAC/UOF officers, law library officers, and craft shop officers) that should help out shift for an hour or two each day, but won't dare come out of their air conditioned offices.

    1. I am grinning my face off. Everyone of these people you wrote of....from H-card to Safe Prisons, Laundry used to sit up in their offices. Now everyone has to come out on our unit. We are so freaking short (all the time). Laundry is on the street at chow, every Sgt., Lt., and Capt. does chow or up front doing pat searches. H-card hates CO's. Tells us we have no work ethics when we call in. Field can't turn out, they have to cover CO's positions. Gym, Safety, everyone works and can never get their work done.

  18. Our unit would have the staff but we cannot use certain officers to cover a priority 1 position and we have to use our priority 1 positions to cover Education, Church and Dining Hall security while leaving housing areas unmanned or understaffed. Yet the craft shop is staffed so certain administration can get their craft items done at a VERY CHEAP rate. Staff do not get breaks and if they put in for the time, the supervisor that keeps the time does not report it. Some people who do earn overtime are instructed to adjust their time off (a week later). Would love to see all of the Correctional Staff get a backbone and file against all the people that are creating unsafe working conditions for staff and as well as offenders. I choose to remain Anonymous due to the high rate of retaliation by Administration, however, my employee grievances are in and hoping that some type of resolution will be taken to better our working conditions and the way we are treated by our Superiors.
