Polunsky staffers plan to testify on pay, advisory role

Although they are climbing a steeper fiscal slope, Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) correctional staff, to include those from the Livingston-based Polunsky Unit, are encouraged by the receptiveness of Rep. Jerry Madden, a key member of the Texas House of Representatives, who is willing to listen to their requests for an increase in salary and benefits.
Eager to continue discussions with Madden, last session’s House Corrections Committee vice chairman, who served as committee chairman from 2005-2009, Polunsky Correctional Officer Earl Brown is looking forward to working with Madden, with the committee as a whole, and with members of the Senate Corrections Committee.

  1. I think expecting a pay increase this session is a pipe dream. But, who knows, weirder things have happened.

  2. While I believe that we could all use a little more money, I think these people are crazy or at least have a lot of gall to ask for a raise in today's economic climate. It makes correctional officers seem out of touch with the real world.

I also have a problem with the C.O. that complain about not making enough money... while they are sitting on their butts not doing their jobs.

The fact is, that in most of the more rural regions, TDCJ pays pretty decent compared to other local jobs that do not require a license or degree.

Perhaps if C.O.s would focus on their outflow (both in terms of money they spend, and work they produce) then in the inflow would take care of itself.

  3. The last two comments are part of what is wrong with TDCJ. We don't back eachother up.It makes no difference what the economic's are,we need to show up there as a whole(like the teachers do).We would get WAY MORE done if we stuck togeather than sitting back and complaining or talking down our coworkers.

  4. The reason the teachers do better is because they support their union efforts and their union refrains from just pocketing the money. Some teachers contribute ten percent of their incomes in the political action fund and the teachers union use the funds to hire "political consultants." Until the officers do this, it does not make any difference how many of them show up in Austin. Ex-sergeant Davis is lying to you when he tells you differently. He is only concealing his practice of pocketing the funds of his membership.

  5. It may be a pipe dream, but I hope it is considered. The true facts that can potentially support it lie with the fact that the job is dangerous, most of society ignores the value and role prisons serve and most importantly the eyes of most people the job truly Sucks. Its almost impossible to establish standards of a higher education or a license because there is no way the state or tax payers can appropriate enough money to entice such people, furthermore, the majority of people that have such qualifications find no desire to work in a prison, face it, who on earth wishes and dreams of working in a prison. This brings me to the point...Pay these poor souls more money, they deserve it and then some, if anyone disagrees go work as a prison guard..this job is a necessary evil until they abolish prisons.

  6. More money will help in the long run, but it will take decades to filter out the TDCJ-ID inbred scum that makes up the primary current influence. TDCJ-ID really needs to get rid of these sons and daughters of TDCJ-ID guards ( like RM, CM, and TM at R3 ) before the organization can make any real changes. This is a reason that these prison systems show so much improvement at a lower cost when they are privatized.

  9. It very well may be a pipe dream but until we put forth an honest effort we will never know.Try,try and try again.Co's have got to learn to stand togeather and back each other up.There is so much backbiting and bickering it makes us sound unprofesional. We have someone that wants to hear from us,so we need to be on the same paige and talk about pay and benifits not about the sorry boss's that only sleep and sit on their butt.I know we have some lousey workers at TDCJ but that happens everywhere. The fact is this is a hard and dangerous job that not many people want to do.We should be paid accordingly. We are the only thing between prisoners and our families. WE ARE NOT OVERPAID BABYSITTERS as gov. Perry has stated.
